Improve Your Weaving Skills with our Beginner Plus-Intermediate Navajo Techniques Class

The Beginner Plus-Intermediate Navajo Techniques class will help you to take your weaving skills beyond the beginner level and will help you to explore the creative world of patterns, colors and textures.  You’ll see how to approach the design process as you develop your own distinctive style of weaving.  Each of the four bi-weekly classes will provide you with time in the classroom with your instructor as well as a 30 minute discussion of wool types, top weavers work, weaving history and, for our Navajo students, an introduction to marketing your work.

Class Prerequisites and Syllabus

You must have your own loom and be able to warp it with minimal assistance.  You must have your own dowels and weaving tools.   The class will cover the following:

  • Week one:  warp your loom under instructor supervision, discussion of wool/yarn selection
  • Week two: design consideration and approaches to pattern; development of traditional patterns in Navajo weaving
  • Week three:  continue work on your current piece; discussion of weaving problems and solutions; trends in contemporary weaving
  • Week four: refine your finishing techniques; plan further weaving projects; discussion of marketing considerations

Our store staff is always available to assist you with questions between your class sessions.  Most of the time, we can solve problems within a few minutes.  There is no additional charge for help in between classes, but please understand that we may need to help other customers while you are in the store.  You are always welcome to weave in the classroom or in the shop during store hours.
