If you know how to cast on, knit, and purl, you are ready to knit your first sock.  Hand knitted socks are super luxurious. With many of the yarns available today, they can even be machine washed and dried.  You can knit socks two at time, but we’ll start with just one. We’ll keep it simple unless you really want to knit a pair on your first try.  The class meets in four two-hour sessions so you can knit your first sock by the end of class.

How You’ll Knit Your First Sock

We will start by looking at different methods of constructing a sock with double points and circular needles.  By the end of the first class, you will have selected a method and started on your sock.  During the next class, we’ll work on the construction of the sock and look at different approaches to the heel. You’ll learn the Fish Lips Kiss Heel, but we’ll talk about other methods.

In week three, we will work on our heels and get ready to either work down the foot or up the leg to finish.  You’ll bind off with either the Kitchener Stitch or Jenn’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-off depending on whether you started from the cuff or the toe.  The socks at right might be a little fancy for your first sock, but they are very doable for a second or third project.

We’ll solve problems along the way, and hopefully give you some inspiration for your next sock.   You carry a sock project with you where ever you go and they make a great gift for someone you really like or for yourself!  With some modifications, you can even use the techniques to make traditional leggings!

Your will answer questions between classes which means that you won’t get stuck as you knit your first sock.  Your class includes a download of the Fish Lips Kiss Heel and instructions for Judy’s Magic Cast On and Jenn’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-off.
