The Baa-ble Hat is one of the most popular patterns ever posted on the Internet.  Talented designer Donna Smith created the hat in 2015 for Shetland Wool Week. The hat appears in nearly 9000 projects in the Ravelry knitting community.  We sell them at our store, but you can knit your own in this intermediate level class.

Baa-ble Hat

Baa-ble Hat with Peace Fleece Navajo Rambouillet Yarn

This class is an excellent introduction to stranded colorwork and Fair Isle knitting.  Both hands knit the yarns so that the colors weave together in a way that does not require knots or laborious finishing. Several yarns in the store are great with this pattern which gives you plenty of colorways to choose from.  You can even work with acrylics if you like.   The Peace Fleece Worsted spun with Navajo Rambouillet is a perfect choice and makes the hat more meaningful in our area.  You’ll need three to four colors and you’ll have enough yarn for two hats with some left over.  We bet you can’t stop with two.

You Can Knit the Baa-ble Hat!

You need to be able to cast on, knit and purl. Continental knitters will learn to throw the yarn.  If you throw, also called English knitting, you’ll knit with continental techniques.  The first class will cover casting on and ribbing.  Next, we go into the body of the hat and knit the sheep with two-handed weaving techniques.  Then, we move to the sky area, decrease for the crown and finish.  We’re allowing four sessions, but you may finish sooner which means that you can start another Baa-ble hat!

Materials needed:

3-4 colors of worsted or Aran weight yarn
size 6, 7, or 8 circular or double point needles to give gauge

Depending on the needles and yarn you already have, you may spend $30 to $100 on materials, but this project is a great stash buster.  Almost any worsted weight yarn will work; you just have to adjust your gauge.  We carry needles and yarn in all price ranges and we do appreciate it if you purchase any new materials that you need here because we think that quality materials will enhance your enjoyment of the project and the results.

You’ll receive the original Baa-ble Hat pattern and we’ll cover several modifications for different weights of yarn.
