Our excellent yarn representative introduced us to Ra-Ra Raffia.   We loved it.  Working with raffia takes some getting used to, but we did it.   It’s great for hats, bags, and home accessories.  What’s the hardest to do?  Hats!  Let’s start with hats!  What’s the most challenging hat to shape?  A fedora!  Let’s start with a Ra-Ra Raffia Fedora Hat!

Choosing a Fedora Pattern for Ra-Ra Raffia

Our shop owner, Mary Walker, likes hats and wanted to try one with the raffia.   She didn’t care for the results from the first pattern she tried, but she found another by Ukrainian designer Nata Maksyuta that she used to make the hat in the picture above.  Nata offers the pattern on Ravelry and Etsy, accompanied by super-helpful videos!  

Over the next few weeks, Mary will help you crochet your version of Ra-Ra Raffia Fedora Hat if you’d like to join us during a Gallup Socker and Allied Sports League meeting.

P.S. The hatband in the picture came from Ts’msyen weavers Loa and Teresa Ryan at the Heard Museum Indian Market.  It’s not part of the project, but you’ll have great ideas about your hatband!

Get Your Hat Kit

You can choose from these Ra-Ra Raffia colors  (currently 25% off):

• Cinnamon Dust
• Desert Palm

• Tropez Tan

Add an Addi Swing crochet hook to your kit if you want to try the style Mary worked with.  Your kit will also include millinery wire and a connector so your hat brim will hold its shape. 

You’ll need access to a steam iron.  You’ll also need a bowl, large jar, or head dummy to shape the hat. 

You will probably also want some Aleene’s Stiffen-Quik to add body to the finished hat.  It’s available in almost any craft store or on Amazon.

We’ll officially start crocheting hats on September 26, but you can sit in on any meeting of the Socker League if you want more information.
