Description

This Hand-knit Joyful Snowman Beanie captures the magic of a star-washed winter night. It makes a wonderful gift for someone special (or maybe for yourself). Mary Walker hand-knitted this version in Brown Sheep Nature Spun worsted-weight yarn in Cobalt Blue and Natural White, with accents of Mohave Sand on the arms. Bits of yarn left over from other projects form the snowman’s eyes and carrot-nose stitches.

The Brown Sheep Company spins 3-ply Nature Spun Worsted in Mitchell, Nebraska, with wool sourced from the United States.  Hand-wash Nature-Spun in cool water and lay flat to dry.

The pattern is based on Lisa McFetridge’s Snow Joy Hat. Mary adapted the pattern to use 2-2 ribbing and knitted it in a medium size that will fit a 19″-22″ head circumference. For reference, the model’s head is 22″, sot someone with a larger head would find the hat too small.

Mary used a stranded colorwork technique called ladderback Jacquard that keeps the work surface smooth. It creates a second layer, so the hat is also warm.

Care Instructions:

  • Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent
  • Gently squeeze out moisture
  • Lay flat to dry

Knitting Notes

Want to knit the hat yourself? It’s a great introduction to color work. You’ll find the pattern on Ravelry. The pattern requires long floats. That can mean puckering. Check out the ladderback jacquard technique for ultimate stretch and float handling. If you would prefer a superwash yarn, we suggest Malabrigo Rios.
