Yes! Sign-up is open for sash belt weaving with Oraña Begay at our Gallup store! Class is scheduled for Sunday afternoons, April 6th, 13th, and 27th, from 11 AM to 4 PM so get ready to weave that sash with us.
We’ll start by creating strong warp yarns with our spinning tools. We’ll weave a small first project you can use as a keychain or lanyard. We’ll finish that first project and plan a second larger project so you’ll be able to progress in your skills.
We will use simple frames for our first projects, but we know you’ll be hankering for larger belts, so we’ll discuss the construction of larger looms. Sash belt battens and suitable yarns are available from Weaving in Beauty, or you can bring your own.
For this first session, we have seats for eight in-person and two virtual students. We hope to add more Zoom opportunities after we have more experience with the techniques. We plan to offer sash belt weaving regularly, so if this schedule doesn’t work for you, stay tuned!
What to Bring
We will have frames for your first project, but you can bring your small sash belt loom, subject to space availability. Check with us so we can figure it out. We have sash belt battens available, and you can also bring your own. You can purchase cotton and wool yarns from Weaving in Beauty. If you prefer to use acrylic yarn, please bring your own.
We’ve got a coffee maker and full-size refrigerator that you’re welcome to use.
About the Instructor:
Oraña Begay is a skilled sash belt weaver and instructor. Oraña has taught classes for Diné College, and his belts are beautiful and highly prized (please see illustration below). Oraña resides in the Chinle area, and we are grateful he is willing to drive the 200-mile round trip to our store!
